Bay Walker 2010

Winning Pitch Entrepreneurial Solutions Consultant David Whiteside recently completed a charity walk with a difference, walking around – not across – Morecambe Bay from his home town of Fleetwood to Foulney Island, covering 120 miles in 44 walking hours over seven days.
One big blister and several sponsors later, David raised much-needed funds for Diabetes UK, the RSPB at Leighton Moss and the Arnside / Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AoNB). David’s aim was to hug the coastline and cross the four major rivers of the Bay via Pilling, Cockerham, Glasson Dock, Lancaster, the Lune peninsula, Sunderland Point, Heysham, Morecambe, Arnside, Grange over Sands, Ulverston and just South of Piel Island near Barrow-in-Furness to the tiny Island scar of Foulney. He had support from Timberland (with sponsorship-in-kind) and various hotels and B&Bs along the coastal way who generously offered reduced rates with these discounts passed on to the nominated charities.
The kindness of passing strangers also contributed another £200 during the walking week. Keen walker and birder David said: “Ultimately this walk was all about the physical challenge, the sense of adventure and achievement and giving a bit back to the charities. I stayed in some gorgeous places, ate wonderful local food and met some real characters en route.”
After his epic trek and unofficial fieldwork assessment of coastal access and litter grot spots, the Morecambe Bay Partnership invited David to present at their Annual Conference in Lancaster with Winning Pitch client the NWDA in attendance along with several other local Councils.
David also picked up invitations to attend and present at various other AGMs and forums from delegates representing the Landscape Trust, Poulton Residents Association and the Arnside Discussion Group. David has set up two online Just Giving sites for those who feel inspired to contribute to the above worthy causes. Please contact him for more information >> d.whiteside@winning-pitch.co.uk
