Leading by example

The quicker you can get the people around you to accept, adapt and implement change effectively, the further you’ll be along your journey to success and the quicker you’ll reach your destination. The best way to do this is to lead by example.

Old-school leadership promotes the practice of “do as I say, not as I do”. Such a dictatorial approach runs the risk of creating resentment and disillusionment in the ranks. A more progressive approach to leadership follows the wisdom of “I won’t ask you to do something that I have not done myself before or that I am not willing to do now”. Such a philosophy

provides the foundation for positive progression of change.

Successful people don’t just use rhetoric – or talk the talk – they also back up their words with actions – or walk the walk. By implementing such a mindset, people instantly know that what you say, you will do. Taking such a stance builds your credibility, enhances your reputation, wins hearts and minds, and fosters a climate of trust and loyalty.

The world is full with people who make empty promises, so make sure that you don’t fall into the trap of being superficial. Stand out from the crowd by pursing a philosophy where affirmative action follows your words. By doing so, you will inspire others to follow in your footsteps, act on your instructions and advice, and support you on your own personal mission.
